June 2022 CIC Webinar: Featured Q&A

Our monthly CIC webinars inspire some really fantastic audience Q&A sessions! In each monthly newsletter, we highlight one of the insightful questions raised from the webinar attendees.

A Featured Question from our June 2022 Webinar
This question was for Jennifer Hamilton, University of Chicago, who presented their research on STEM students and Advanced Placement testing during the pandemic, Pandemic learning loss in U.S. high schools: A national examination of student experiences, a research update.

Question:
Did the students in your survey give information about why they didn’t feel empowered to complete Advanced Placement testing? Aside from technology, did they feel it may have been affected by other environmental (or emotional) factors?

Answer from Jennifer Hamilton:
The lower income respondents noted that they didn't feel prepared, that they had other larger concerns, they felt that they didn't have reliable internet access - there were a number of reasons cited. But the one reason that stands out is that they didn't think they were going to pass and they were demoralized. There are a number of solutions our research proposes to address this, including high-dose tutoring and acceleration programs.

Thank you to all of our June 2022 speakers and our CIC Community audience members for keeping the conversation going!
