June 2021 CIC Webinar Recap
Watch the full June CIC webinar.
On Wednesday, June 9, 2021, six researchers studying wide-ranging aspects of the current pandemic came together as a part of the ongoing COVID-19 Research Webinar series organized through the COVID Information Commons, to share their research and insights with our community. This month’s event featured speakers Dr. Katie Corvey of Auburn University, Dr. Luis Ortiz of The New School, Dr. Jeffrey Townsend of Yale University, Dr. Gangli Wang and Dr. Jonathan Padelford, Georgia State University, Dr. Haichong (Kai) Zhang, Worcester Polytechnic Institute, and Dr. Caroline Zeiss of Yale University. Their research includes a study of policy-maker behavior in the context of COVID-19, an examination of the durability of immunity against reinfection by SARS-CoV-2, development of a safer robotic approach for lung ultrasound in the context of transmittable diseases, a faster technique for quantitation of SARS-CoV-2 viral RNAs, overlapping heat and COVID-19 hazards and the social vulnerability of New York City, and much more. Videos of each of the researcher lightning talks highlighting insights gained from their NSF-funded research are available on the CIC website in the “Meet the Researchers” tab. The webinar concluded with a Q and A session where the researchers answered questions from members of our community.
The CIC lightning talks highlighted the importance of interdisciplinary efforts from across fields to address the current pandemic and to better prepare us for the future by not only developing improved techniques such as for diagnosis and testing but also by trying to answer crucial questions like how long immunity is likely to last after exposure to the virus.
A recording of the entire event is available at the Northeast Big Data Hub’s YouTube channel as well as on the CIC website at covidinfocommons.net. The COVID Information Commons is an NSF-funded project brought to you by the Big Data Innovation Hubs, led by the Northeast Big Data Innovation Hub at Columbia University.
The next CIC COVID-19 Research Webinar, featuring research funded by NSF and NIH on topics such as Social Epidemiology of COVID-19, computationally predicting and characterizing the immune response to viral infections, new foam-based decontamination methods with minimum wastewater generation, human mobility patterns linked to COVID-19 prone locations, and more, will take place on Friday, July 16, 1:00pm – 2:30pm ET. Register for the July webinar, sign up for the CIC mailing list, and join the CIC Slack channel for updates on future events and opportunities to engage with the COVID Information Commons community.
